At last, the third story in my Servin' It Up series is finished and turned into the publisher.
Tentative Blurb:
An avalanche of incidences threatened Beth Jarvis’ job, her sanity and nearly her life. It all began when Lucas Davison, her boss, proposed. Vandalism forces her to confess her past, but he’s tightlipped about his, until he finds he’s been caught with Tyler Tyree, a former NFL player turned politician.
I'll keep you posted.

Bunny Love
The hardest thing about this blog was to know when to shut up and which photos to use. lol

My third son, 14 here, had been begging for a bunny for a couple of years. He was approaching the teen years and I knew as much as he’d love the adorable furry creature, the care would fall on me. I kept putting him off.
Well, we love auctions and around here in the month of March, various communities have community auctions. These are major deals and something my family is into. So, we drove the hour to the farthest one we attend, met up with my dad and siblings, it was rainy and cold, as usual. We let the boys wonder around to see what was what and after we got our number cards, I went in search of what I was after. That particular year, I was after galvanized wash tubs and fencing. Jackpot, so I parked myself to await the start of the bidding.
Jesse found me. All excited, he asked if he could bid on a bunny. I couldn’t say no, so I explained to him how the bidding worked and gave him my number to use. He came back two hours later with a little, adorable white with black spots, bunny. My fear at that moment was that he’d take her from the box and loose her and something would happen. However, he was very responsible.
A few hours later, we came home and I went down to the store to get supplies and came home and he was on the House Rabbit Society website. He said he’d been in it several times and knew what to do. I set Faith’s cage up, decked out with cedar chips, water, alpha pellets and hay. The bunny, yet to be named at this point, set in the litter box and just watched us with curiosity.
I went out to my computer and began reading how to care for a house bunny. Lesson number one sent me running back to the cage, removing bunny from the cage. Then I took wire part of cage off, took out the hay, the pellets and the litter box. I took the base outside and dumped the cedar chips into the trash and scrubbed it out. Cedar chips are harmful to bunnies. I went back down to the store and purchased a bag of Comfort Care, a paper product bedding.
All set back up, I returned back to the computer and continued reading. We were all set to enjoy our new baby.

I’d like you to meet Faith. She’s a Rhinelander/English Spot mix. She’s five years old and around ten pounds, which is normal for the breeds. When she was younger and had no playmates, people were her favorite companions. My husband would come in from work, step into the living room and she’d run up to him and try to climb up his leg. He’d sit down in his recliner laughing and she’d jump in his lap and sniff him before lying down for some petting and talking. This was their time together.
While I had most days with her, our really special time was and is still after everyone has gone to bed. She’s come up on the couch and to lay beside me. If I don’t acknowledge her right away, she’d nudge my hand or pull on my clothes. She loves to have her body massaged, her ears rubbed and her jowls rubbed. And she loves to be brushed. Her favorite food is bananas and greens.
Oh, she’s always had one ear that doesn’t stand up unless she makes it. It makes her even more personality oriented.
I remember the first time I saw her laying on her side. My heart sank. She didn’t appear to be breathing. Her cute little nose wasn’t moving. Trembling I went to her and touched her. She jumped and looked at me with glazed eyes. I belonged to petshub.com and when I told them about this, I was told it meant she felt very safe and secure in her surroundings. Whew!
Our first trip to the vet was an experience. I hated leaving her there. She was being spayed. They are a wonderful group though. Kept be abreast of everything. Called me before they left the office to let me know she was ok, called me the next morning to let me know when she was going to surgery, called me afterwards. And and called me the day after she came home. She pulled her staples out and had to have it redone - downfall and added expense. She absolutely hated Natalie after her surgery. We couldn’t let them out together for nine months without having to separate them. They fought. Hormones.
This is our Natalie. The breeder told the place where I bought her that she's a Neatherland Dwarf, she isn't. She's an American Sable, though her coloring is very much like the Neatherland Dwarf. She's five pounds and the groomer of the clan. She has this fascination with Faith's eyes.
One day, the neighbor boy was outside, in back of his garage, bouncing a basketball on concrete. This really got her attention. She stood like this listening the entire time he was out there -- almost an hour. I thought it interesting. Faith used to do this whenever Brooks & Dunn came on television and sang. Seriously, she would sit in front of the television and listen to them, then go about her way when they finished.

This is Adam today - quite handsome isn't he? Notice how black his nose and ears have gotten. They aren't this black all the time. The black will come down his ears, his face and the patch around his nose will darken and become lighter as his ears to. The base of his ears will turn white for almost a inch and a half up his ears. A few months later, the black goes back up. The vet can't explain it.
At times, he reminds me of the bunny on the Skittle commercial. I just loved that commercial.
Here's a look at two of the condo's. This spring I will be redoing them and giving them new flooring. They are four feet high, two and a half feet wide and on casters. Faith's is three feet long and Natalie's is two feet long. They have a ramp up to a landing and another ramp up to where you see Faith laying. I will be making all three the same size this time around. This unit used to be one condo for Fairth, then we split it when Natalie came along, with Faith on the lower and Natalie on top. Natalie wasn't thrilled with the height of the ramp to come down, so I split them the other way. The entire unit cost as much as the small hutches you buy in a pet store.
Raising bunnies have been the most enjoyable and enlightening experience we've ever had aside from raising pigeons.
Our trek into Bunny Love didn’t happen over night. We’re a family of animal lovers. Ok, I’m the only one doesn’t like spiders and snakes, except maybe in Jim Stafford’s song. We’re the type of family that will pull over on the side of the road to watch prairie dogs play, deer feed and hold up traffic when we see deer running toward the highway. Yes, we’ve done that.

We couldn’t let them out together for nine months without having to separate them. They fought. Hormones.
Her favorite food is carrots and she loves to play with this cage ball and key rings. She picks them up and tosses them several times before finding something else to do.
When I took Natalie in for spading, she did something so sweet and endearing that it brought tears in my eyes. Unlike Faith, she's not one to cuddle or stand for being pampered. She barely tollerates me trimming her nails. But in the vet office, she turned from the vet and put her paws on my belly and stretched up, looking at me like, please don't leave me like you did Faith. So sad, but for the fact that she did this out of the norm told me she did love me. Only in the last year has she felt secure enough to stretch out on her side and sleep -- it's the cutest thing. The silliest thing she does and I swear she does it. She doesn't alway hop, she'll walk like other four-legged animals. It makes her waddle and cracks me up.
Adam - oh, my wasn't he the cutest baby ever. This was taken the day after we brought him home from the same auction we had acquired Faith at two years earlier. He was completely at home on the couch with me. He's now three years old, and about eight pounds. He's a Californian. He's a little more cautious about food -- if it's something new, he won't eat it the first couple of times he's offered it. He has to watch Faith chow down on it first. If she seems to be enjoying it, then he'll taste her sampling first.
Kitty, ten in these photos, didn't mind Adam in the least. Fortunately, all of our cats, dogs and bunnies get along like this. However, the bunnies are never unsupervised when they're out.
When we acquired my youngest son's cat, he was an itty-bitty thing and Natalie mothered him. He will sleep and play with the bunnies, but Adam and he have their nighttime ritual. It's the funniest thing you'll ever see. They'll chase each other around the room. Adam will run into his home and Buster will lay down in front, roll over and stretch his paws out playfully. Adam's response to this is to come flying out and landing on his belly then running. They'll run around the room a couple times, Buster will lay down all tuckered out and Adam will watch, waiting for the game to resume. When it doesn't, he will jump straight in the air and come down on Buster and run. I treasure the nights.
At times, he reminds me of the bunny on the Skittle commercial. I just loved that commercial.
All fun aside, taking care of bunnies is not as simple as cats and dogs. They have no reflex to get rid of hair balls like cats do. And they do shed, some more than others. Faith is our big shedder. To help with this, they need a little extra fiber and water in their system and frequent brushing. I give them banana in the morning - in the evening, they get romaine lettuce, the darker the better, they split carrot and celery stalk. I used to give them broccoli -- one day I noticed Natalie showing signs of bladder infection. This meant a trip to the vet where she spent three days. No bladder infection, but her bladder was deformed and full of sludge. They feared cancer. To rid her bladder of sludge, I had to monitor her water intake, good luck with that. lol They wanted her to have at least two tablespoons a day. With the water in the celery and carrot, I wasn't too concerned. Among the three of them, there are five bottles of water and whenever one drinks, I know it.
They told me to take all calcuim products away from them, that once they get past seven months old, they shouldn't have alpha products due to the calcium. It causes health problems. Broccoli is full of calcium. This was deemed the issue with Natalie if she didn't have cancer. They called me every day for a week to see how she was doing. She's been fine ever since and it's been over a year.
The worries don't stop there, especially with a house of full teens. My bunbuns have a sweet tooth. Faith especially, you have to guard your orange juice, your candy and fruit. Goodness, if you sit in here with any fruit, be prepared. You'll have three bunnies vying for a bite. It's actually halarious, but since they have their fruit in the morning, they shouldn't have more.
When Adam was small, he used to sneak up and drink my coffee, sweetned with sugar and powdered cream. It never harmed him, but I learned to watch it closer. Who'd think it.
Unattended chocolate will set me off quicker than anything. I've heard too many stories where little kids thought it nice to share their chocolate candy or chocolate cookies with their bunny. It's not a pleasant pass-away-in-their-sleep death. It's horrid. The only food bunnies should have access to at all times is Western Timothy Hay. This is something they should never be without. It's their primary food.
Here are a couple cute photos of bunny-meet-bunny the safe way. When aquiring a new bunny, it's not that much different than bringing home a new baby when you already have a child at home. They don't often take to one another right away. The best way to let them adust is to let them get to know one another with wire between them. They need to watch, smell and accept a new addition. It wasn't long for either Natalie or Adam to to be accepted, much to the chargin of the ladies at Pets Hub. They reamed me out for allowing my buck to hang out with the
does. Maybe it's just us, but after a few mishaps the first week or so, not a problem since. You often will see them huddled together, chasing each other and sleeping together. When I go to work, they often want to be together in one condo. When I go to sleep for a few hours, this is their time to have their 'me' time. And when morning comes, they are so excited to be together.
As you can see, a lot of time and love go into the care of house bunnies. It also costs me 204.00 a month.
So please, think hard and long before you purchase a bunny for an Easter gift.

Bunnies Aren't Gifts - They're Life-Long Commitments
Bunnies Aren’t Gifts –They’re Lifelong Commitments
This time of year so many parents give in to the wants and whining of their small children and buy them a bunny for Easter. Or they simply think it’s a terrific idea to do.
I’m begging you – DON’T!
More often than not, the poor defenseless bunny ends up dead or taken to a shelter that is overrun with bunnies from parents who’ve done the same thing as you have. It breaks my heart.
Children need something they can hold and cuddle. Buy them a stuffed bunny instead. Bunnies scratch and bite when feel insecure and threatened. Most do not want to be held, especially by a young child who holds them too tight, or wrong. Most adults don’t know how to hold a bunny, much less pick one up, why would you think a child would know. Never, ever pick them up by the ears or the scruff of the neck. It angers me to think about people doing this. Bunnies have fragile backs and doing this can cause them to break as they twist and turn to get free.
Children become easily bored and parents don’t want to take the time to care properly for them, so they’re often left in some hutch in the backyard or a metal cage with little attention. This is just wrong.
Bunnies have a long life span – 12-15 years, sometimes more when properly cared for.
Bunnies are expensive. They require a vet who has specialized training with bunnies. Vet bills are high and I’m talking for a simple visit for a checkup a minimum of $50. Quadruple this if you are going to have them spayed/neutered. And if the bunny gets sick or injured, plan on paying the same.
And often, the wrong foods are fed to the rabbits. Despite popular belief, iceberg lettuce is not good for them. Never give iceberg lettuce. Their primary food source is free-reign hay, which means they should never be without hay. The Kayee Western Timothy hay is good, but Oxbow brand is better. After the first six or seven months of life, they don’t need alpha pellets – it has too much calcium and can cause the bladder to fill up with sludge and make them sick. Broccoli has way too much calcium as well. Carrots have a lot of water, so give sparingly.
Bunnies, like puppies, love to chew and like you do for your little ones, their play area needs to be bunny-proofed, which is much like childproofing. Bunnies love to chew electrical cords. Hide them, get them off the floor.
Like kids, dogs and yourself, they do get bored. Give them toys to play with. Oatmeal barrels are especially fun for small bunnies. Toilet and paper towel rolls, cardboard boxes with all tape and labels removed. Baby toys – the hard plastic kind like key rings. Yes, bunnies love to play. They will pick them up and toss them. Pet stores have a few safe toys for them, wood chews, carrot shaped toys, they even have bunny keys, hanging toys where you can mix and match different items. Some of the bird toys are safe for bunnies as well.
Bunnies can be litter trained. It’s easier than training a kitten to use the litter box or a puppy to go outside.
You need to be educated before you purchase a bunny.
The best place to learn about House Rabbits is http://www.rabbit.org/. Bookmark it, study it, print out the list of good foods and when in doubt, check the list of poison foods. Never, ever give them chocolate in any form, it can kill them. There is also one other place to gain help and information. http://www.petshub.com/ -- in this forum, you’ll find forms for any pet you may have or may be thinking about getting. There is one for Rabbits. While I don’t agree with all they say, they do have experience and can lead you to other help.
As for their cages. NO cedar or other treated woods. Untreated pine, untreated pine cat litter is safe. Feline Pine is a kiln dried southern pine completely untreated. NEVER use clay litters, the dust is dangerous to them.
My next post will be of my bunnies and I'll talk about what I’ve learned from raising them.
